Ships and raising up morale

Ships are rather specific in how they handle supply.
Given that, to gain morale as per the manual, based on their supply level, do they need to be in harbor, to be fed with supply, or can they be adjacent, a few hexs away or just in the plain sea, where they can still maintain supply for a long time?

They just need to be in good supply, ideally 10, and this can be obtained by being next to a port as well as in it, with the supply a ship gains from a port decreasing by 1 per hex distance from it.
Simply being at sea does not use up supply, though combat and cruising do.

Oh, very important. So they are fed from a distance of up to 10 hexes from the port (with 1 less supply per hex). Good to know really!

All I know is that when the daily ration of distilled spirits run out, spirits onboard plummet.

When it hits zero, you've got a potential mutiny on your hands.
