Is the game stats oriented?

Before requesting to join the beta testing, I wanted to get a feel for the game, to see whether I could really contribute.

After reviewing the screenshots on the Matrix game page, I get the impression RtW is heavily stats oriented. Can the game be played/enjoyed without much knowledge of ship design and technical stats? Having little interest in that aspect, would I be useful just 'playing' the game, testing gameplay features and scenarios?

Hello gwgardner,

A working knowledge of early/mid-20th century naval combat would perhaps be useful to get the most out of the RTW series, but I think having folks without a 'deep' level of such knowledge could certainly prove helpful for the playtest as well.

I'd add that the ship design can be a very significant part of the game, but you can also use some pre-built designs. The battles themselves can be resolved with relatively little direction with automated squadrons or with heavy micromanagement. The most important part comes down to managing the evolution of a navy over the course of decades, which means economic, construction, research and political decisions. It can be very stats-oriented, but does not have to be. As William said, a good knowledge of 20th century naval history will probably be the biggest help.

- Erik

Thanks for the responses. I'll definitely apply, and see how it goes.
