It's just awful. Especially in the main menu. One massive spazing background. Space, unless viewed through an extremely turbulent atmosphere, does not spaz like that.

I second this. It makes for quite an unpleasant experience at times.
Edit: I would like the old DW option of density slider

I complained about this very issue when the game first released. Have not played it since because of this problem. It is sad that this still has not been addressed.

I have been able to use reshade software to dull the background stars down a bit.

I am guessing that the purpose of the speckles and lit dust-ish visuals are for the player to be able to surmise, visually, that a hull is moving relative to the galaxy.
Flickering may be a stay alert protocol, or a prevent sleep protocol. Knowing when to dim and when to not flicker is the rub. Intensity is another matter and how it relates to emergency.

Probably, but DW1 had a better-looking background than DW2. Honestly, I don't know how it works. just wondering if it's possible to create a static background image instead of the stars.
