Sorry to jump in here an infinite time later.

I have the 2000 SSG version. There were a few bugs in actual gameplay, rather than the engine.
I used to know where the workarounds were but it was a while back.
I sincerely miss the game, a rare type of gameplay. I wish someone had reworked it/rebooted it.

However, my question is - am I right to understand that the 1.41 patch will work with the previous (2000) game, even though the forum and discontinuation imply that there are still bugs?

This reply comes a little late, but for anyone else stumbling on this forum with the same question, the answer is, yes, the 1.41 patch works with the original 2000 version. With a directdraw wrapper (like the one from GOG) and disabled font smoothing, it runs great in Windows 10.
