I started playing scenarios (still am), but was not fully using all game facilities. Gradually, I have gone more and more hands on micro as I learn the game(s) better.

But it has dawned on me that the GC dwarfs these little 10-30 turn scenarios for VLs. So, despite finally learning the sub-systems (not doing theaters; not ready), it seems I will be forced back to automated AI dependence since like managing SUs for CUs & HQs will take an entire day on its own.

So, is this going to happen to me? After finally learning to micro, am I going to have to go macro if I want to GC?

What is your experience? Thanks.

Hi Mark,

It all depends on how you want to play the game. Most players on multiplayer would manage all those themselves rather than the AI (air war, logistics, HQ's, SU etc).

On a side note Theatres can be a little daunting at first (especially for Axis) but it's a lot of fun for both the TB and on-map. The only downside is the manual is out of data for TB requirements over time but there's already a great resource out there for Axis

Well, MP players are the hardcore of the hardcore as you should not sacrifice any edge, but playing the AI is just for fun. I have only been mocked by AI in a single game, and that was Fritz Chess Chat.

I would always encourage people to try multiplayer though. So long as you verse an opponent with equal experience, you both will learn so much more against a human opponent than the AI.

It all depends what you enjoy in a game. Particularly in the opening turns of a GC (re)organising and managing your forces manually takes hours of patient concentration and although the workload will lighten up a bit, it never goes away. You might want to draw up a checklist to ensure you don't forget tasks during a turn, at least until you establish your own "muscle memory" of things to do. Use the Comanders Report and its filters for managing SU's and air units, that helps a lot.

Don't forget to use the export csv option, then you can pursue the excel files and track what/where the SU are and how you might want t reallocate them.

Generally speaking, I like to micromanage, but I completely understand that it is not for everyone. The only turn that will be tough is the set-up as you will want to rearrange some of the divisions to other corps and corps to other armies. You will also want to rearrange the SUs between the corps. Some corps have way too many SUs (looking at you 8th corps of the 9th Army) and others do not have anything. If you play with the option to lock the SU then you really don't have to manage them all that much. Maybe look at them every three turns or so.

I do my own air for the set-up, but you can save yourself some headache by using the set up in the scenario. Just delete the recon. The results are very good. I don't do much better if at all with my own set-up.

As others suggested you may want to write down the tasks you should do each turn. After a while your routine will become automatic. The Grand Campaign is great. To me it is well worth the effort.
