Unlikely Targetting

Watching paint dry on battle display level 7, you can see who is firing at who and with what. This doesn't reveal a very flattering estimation of Russian artillery in 41-42 or Russians in general, but in particular I see short range ordnance targetting opposing weapons that are far out of their range. For example, morters of both sides target howitzers and guns that fire from many thousands of feet, yards or meters behind the frontline, way beyond the range of such mortars even if they were on the very front line, which, according to the range given when they fire themselves, they are not. What is supposed to be going on here and is it working as designed?

That may be a limitation of the game engine, it seems to make everything move within close combat range.

As a workaround, would it not be possible to prevent particular ordnance types from counter battery fire?

There has been some concern about mortars, in general, being OP.

Perhaps being able to fire beyond their traditional range (if this is indeed occurring) is the source of this?

Mortars were generally reponsible for inflicting very high casualties so without knowing the specific problem, in general I'd be in favour of them firing the same amount but within their range, ie the front line and a little behind.

To see what the game says is happening, watch a battle on level 7 and you'll see the game give the ranges at which each ordnance fires, presumably from the front line rather than the target. In either case, short range ordnance would actually have to be infiltrated behind enemy lines to fire at heavy guns located 18000+ X behind the contact line.

You don't need to watch at "7", you can export the combat file and look at it in editor/notepad/excel.
