We are now in November 44, PBEM
Please tell me what kind of magic I need to understand to get King Tigers (271 in pool!!!) into my heavy battalions.
Have been moving them around ok go to WE , Italy... Reserve etc, etc. No joy.
I also have a lot of good medium tanks sitting in pools waiting for the war to end.
I am not a master of this game at all but this guess work is driving me mad.

Sorry I did not see this - The game just finished in Jan 45 . No option to continue, Its supposed to be fought to bitter end...
I had around 450 Tigers in Pool and maybe 220+ Tiger II as of end Dec 44 - two units converted to Tiger 2 one was a small company, no matter where else I put the others nothing happened.
I need a button to change equipment like AE, I cannot live with this kind of smoke and mirrors system , for me its disappointing. I like detail and complexity but this enigma ,,, well it detracts from the game a large amount.
My opponent wants to start another but I would like some reasoning behind lack of upgrades ?

Ok loaded 24/12/44 Turn.
only one Battalion and one co. I think have King Tigers - Halder is the boss Admin 9 - if you cannot arrange it know one can.
Or someone tell me how to get one of over 300 King Tigers actually into a unit???

Since both Tigers and King Tigers are heavy tanks, they are thus both considered equally adequate for being assigned to a heavy tank battalion. The King Tiger is not considered by the AI to be an upgrade that needs to replace a Tiger in a unit.
The button you would like, that the air units have for manual upgrades, does not exist for land units.
If you actually ran out of Tigers, then of course all the King Tigers would start to fill those battalions.

Thanks for that - I suspected that was the case when I see PZD using rubbish tanks in 43 when better were available.
So by being good and not losing too much stuff you in fact hang yourself for new equipment - someone please change this to be like air units. The situation is silly. I want to choose which units get what - thats is what they did not just put stuff out random like.
Though its does not explain why one changed I think soon after July 44?

I checked TOE for a heavy panzer battalions in 44 GC, should be the same in GC i believe, and at some point in 44 they start to require king tigers instead of tigers one. Having required items in the pool + freight is still not enough for the game to make a replacement?

Tks for thee reply. No matter in reserve, on map or TB nothing happens. As I said I think 1 Co. and one Battalion did convert and that was early on. Same applies with other tanks on reflection. Surely all units in NR at the very worst should have access to the latest equipment.
I do not understand the rationale of the designers at all on this matter. You can change a plane but not a tank?

This is the unfortunate truth. It isn't ideal to be sure, but this is a strategy game, and the inability to have the biggest cat in your unit when a smaller cat is considered acceptable by the AI is not going to alter the game results to any degree. It's one of those flaws that offends our sensibilities but not much more.

If the game ended in January 1945, it was because of the first of January check of Soviet VPs versus the Axis HWM. The No Early End version of the scenario removes the quarterly auto-victory and auto-loss checks, but specifically does not remove this late game check against the HWM. This is the way the German player can win the game late because the Soviet player has not been fast enough to offset the German HWM. We realize some players would like to play to the end, but this HWM check is a critical component of the victory system in WitE2. It provides the incentive for the Germans to push in the early game (when they can still win outright and would be forced to try to do that). It provides the incentive for the Soviet player to move quickly to retake lost cities. It's not all about taking Berlin to judging victory. I appreciate that some players want to fight to the very end, even if they've lost. Unfortunately, it was a lot easier to create the No Early End scenario than it would be to allow the game to have a way to continue the game after the game has effectively ended.
As for the replacement issue, I just discussed this again with Gary and Pavel and the conclusion is that trying to impact the decisions being made re replacements would be very risky. Adding the ability to update a unit in the reserve to try to bring in items that match it's TOE might be possible, but the risk in this case is that players might swap in new equipment, and the auto system might just override the decision and switch things back. This would be adding more micromanagement, while potentially just frustrating players. It's all about the number of items in the pool, how many units are using the units, and whether the item is out of production. In my last test game, in March 1945, 6 units were using Tiger IIs and 10 were using Tiger Is. There were 240 Tiger Is in the pool and 130 Tiger IIs in the pool. The bigger problem the Germans had was they didn't have the manpower to fill out the units. If they had, most of them would have been used. It seems these AFVs manage to hold up better than others, probably because they aren't taking enough non-combat losses and there's only a small number of units that use them. Since you won, clearly you were doing better than history. My suggestion for players is if they find their heavy tanks accumulating in the pool, they make a point of using their heavy panzer battalions aggressively in combat. Use them in your major counterattacks. They'll probably fight well, and you can afford to take the losses. Being they are support units, you should be able to move them around the front and attach them to get them involved.

Thanks for coming back. I note your comments and you have far more understanding than me. I get the point on manpower but surely if I have Tiger I with crew they are just going over to the Tiger II and we do not want to lose the experience by getting killed in reckless attacks. Same also applies to other tanks BTW.
I would say in mitigation maybe the production level of Tiger I is too high????
Maybe units on refit can have more chance of updating based on Admin roll or something.
