What happens if the Jap player occupies Portland (Usa) around Spring/42? How long can Jap player hold Portland if the Allied player was totaly unprepared for such an invasion? Can this attack bring any success to Jap player aside from massive morale debuff for Allied player? Let's discuss.

Manual 8.3.5.
8.3.5 COUNTER INVASION FORCES
If ground units from one side or the other move into certain areas of the map they will trigger
various reinforcements for the other side to appear. The reinforcements that appear are
dependent on the area that is entered. These areas include:
....
ยป West Coast of North America south of Vancouver
Thus, it'd trigger that, not to mention that all permanently restricted units in West Coast etc. would be able to participate the party. Some have tried it, though, but not very successfully.

To avoid covering too much previous ground, there was actually a rather extensive thread on this subject back in 2018. Consensus seems to have been that's its a gamey move, but the designers couldn't account for everything that players do.

As those topic discussions show, it is frowned upon, especially in PBEM.
Those sort of invasions are very "gamey".

Darn! Looks like my massive invasion of Tokyo in January 1942 is off!

Yeah, the treacherous mouth of the Columbia River is not a body of water you would want to transit in an invasion fleet. Especially not under coastal gunfire. It's like nature's own minefield. Just one of many local problem areas the generic terrain aspects of the game map really can't take into account.

Those 10" and 12" CD mortars do not sound friendly towards invasion fleet...

That unit with the mortars and guns have always been there.

I seem to recall that CD unit was on the north side of the river. Historically, there were fortifications on both sides of Columbia. Forts Canby and Stevens.

Just checked.
It is same in earlier version, so I don't know what Andy Mac is talking about in this context.

Not seeing any in scenario one. Just the unarmed 117th USAAF Base Force. No ground reinforcements scheduled either.

Just in case, I checked the Portland in Victoria, Australia. Not there either.

If it is Invasion Reinforcement you will not see it until an invasion below the 49th Parallel. And that would appear the day after the invasion starts.

If you are talking Dec 41 its gamey, if its mid42 it is because of a lazy Allied player. It Isnt hard to place an Infantry Division to defend one of your key shipbuilding bases, plus have it at 3-4 fort level.

Without the surprise element of the Japanese December 7th "Magic Move" you gotta figure a slow-moving Japanese invasion fleet steaming upriver in the mouth of the Columbia is gonna take a hell of a beating in the triangulated crossfire of three forts before it gets anywhere near Portland. The river bar is only three miles wide and was historically unfriendly in terms of weather conditions to non-piloted shipping. It's gamey in a lot of respects.
