How do you stop units from firing?

I'm trying to create a situation where cavalry units don't fire until night time has settled in, his forces are bunched around the victory points, and I have the night vision advantage. But they just keep blasting away.

Can you send me a saved game? I suspect that you have a different SOP setting for the actual order that the unit has. I can confirm that with a saved game file. You can check the SOP of individual orders (and change them) at the "Scope" at the top of the SOP Manager. The "Default SOP for New Order" is just that. If you change the default it does not propagate down to the current order(s) unless you select "Apply to this and later unit orders" button.

With respect to the title of this post, the answer is set SOP to "Refuse Fire". I do this frequently for stationary recon elements I want to surveil. There is no mechanism to change SOP upon a battlefield event trigger. You can only adjust during your Order phase.

Thanks gents. I'll do as you suggest, and activate turn by turn saves in case I have further problems.

"Refuse fire" did the trick. If I understand cbelva's point, when I do want the units to begin firing I will need to change the SOP, and give them a new order. Is that correct?
So what is the use case for "hold until fired on?"
Thank you for your time on this.

I use "Hold until fired on" for my recon when I have them hidden and I don't want them to give their position away. If they get fired on it means that they are spotted and I want to give them a fighting chance. Refuse fire means that they will not fire even if fired on. I don't think I have ever used that one.

I do that for surveillance. The transport may die and then the dismounted scouts end up unspotted and remain in place counting and identifying forces as they pass through the surveillance area.

One of his artillery units rolled on top of a unit and it did open fire. Another unit was spotted and fired upon, and did not return fire. So I changed its SOP before I ordered it to back off.
