Scenario "Regulars forward" needs some re-work to balance

Scenario "Regulars forward" needs some re-work to balance.
IMHO, it is unplayable as WP in PBEM. Scenario started at 1900 , ended at 0100. Night time started at 2200.
An experienced NATO player can just bomb WP position for 3 hours, wait for the night time to fall then start the final push. Because when the night time begin, illumination is at 0%. That means non of the combat units on the map can see further than 1 hex. Their LOS is restricted at the same hex they occupied.
It's funny the BRDM scout units can see as far as 1000m because they have IR search light.
Sov are no longer using IR search light after mid of 1980s for good reasons, but apparently due to current game mechanism the IR search light can be a savior for Soviet troops.
I am wondering if it is possible to balance the scenario by:
revise the BMP-2 units from obr 1986 version

- BMP-2 1986.jpg (73.76 KiB) Viewed 1068 times
to BMP-2 obr 1980?

- BMP-2 1980.jpg (64.88 KiB) Viewed 1068 times
and change those T-80B1 to T-64B1?
at least it should give WP player a chance to fight during the night.

I always get my NATO ass kicked because the Soviet AI patrols aggressively as I try to move units close enough for the final assault. Try driving the M113's around for a while if you think you have problems with BMP-2's.
In my experience with Red Storm, the devs are encouraging and supportive of people seeking to create mods. And they're all into the best data available. Just do it. And post it.

Wait a min, just realized that.
Shouldn't most of the Soviets vehicle at cold war era have IR weapon sights working at the near-IR spectrum?
it has low quality and low detection range compare to star-light NVG/ passive light amplification NVG. Without IR search light, the IR weapon sight is working handicapped. Buuuut, the IR weapon sight does not impacted by illumination level?
And it should give most of the Sov AFV one hex of sight at the condition of 0 illumination???

Thanks for your comment.
The NIR is comparable to visual light and still needs amplification (image intensifiers). We model that as part of the NVGs.
Data for Soviet night sights confirms your statement that Soviet (and Western) passive NIR sight should have approx 500m of detection range. We're looking into a change to both sensor data and weather illumination data to better model this.

The WP player will always be at a disadvantage at night for good reasons. Personally I do not see balancing needs. The WP player just has to work around the difficulties. Not sure about the AI though.

We value feedback on all scenarios, so we can make adjustments to have them be challenging fights from both sides.

Tcao, are you using the Colored Counters Mod I just noticed in the mod subforum, or something else? Beautiful BMP-2, let me know!

Tcao, all,
the new beta does include improvement based on the issue you raised here. It's about the game not offering a "starlight" illumination level between "moon lit" and "pitch dark", and NIR night sights (as on the T-72 and M-60) being effective at starlight illumination level (but not at pitch dark).
Night-time Illumination and Spotting.
• New: Soviet and M60 NIR night vision equipment can function with *starlight*.
• We have upgraded the weather data to honor starlight (no moon and limited clouds) next to dark (overcast night) and bright (moonlight and limited clouds) conditions.
• The game now supports filtering in ScenEdit on 'partially dark' (starlight) weather.
• The Regulars Forward scenario has been updated to have starlight nights, not pitch dark nights, so Soviet forces will be spotting beyond the hex during starlight illumination.
Thanks for your input.

Thank you and appreciate that, will double check this new feature later.
