I may have this wrong somehow, but I'm trying to get the Unit List to show as NATO and then have the 3D units on-map.

I've tried selecting:
Options/Unit List/Counter Options/NATO

Should I see a NATO symbol, instead of the 3D unit representation?

I can't remember if I ever used that view, so maybe I'm misinterpreting it! Thanks for looking at it, and setting me on the path.

I think the step you are missing is

Options - Unit List - Show Counters.

That should switch it to NATO for you if you have the Counter Graphics changed to NATO.
