bombard, tooltip questions

Is it possible to designate a bombardment target that is not a base, but rather an enemy unit that is attacking one of your bases?
In the mouseover tooltip on a spotted enemy unit, one sees the number of troops 'spotted'. Does the quoted number included the 'other' troops, or just the combat elements of the unit?

Yes, but don’t have too high expectations on the results.
All, but FOW may give you an inaccurate number.

FOW is Fog Of War which is different than atmospheric fog.
I suggest that you scroll up and check out the glossary of terms . . .

I wanted to be more specific on this question. I am asking if a Bombardment TF can target an enemy unit that is alone and not in a base but rather in a clear, rough or other terrain hex that is partially land and partially water?

Yes
Another reason a player needs a separate game install...so he can practice this sort of thing.
Downfall Scenario...Bombardment from Manila to a ground hex.

How do you pull it off? I haven never been able to bombard the Jap LCU in the non-base hex adjacent to Hong Kong at GC start. Do you set TF bombardment distance to 0?

Remain on Station.
But why?....You will only get about 20 hits and the Japanese air will tear you up.

Always used Retirement Allowed and the TF never even sailed to bombard. Thank you!

What ships are in your bombardment task force? Is that a river hex? If so, you won't be able to move BBs into the hex.

Destroyers...British Task Force 433.
Not a river Hexside. Open to Large ships.
Battleships can go all the way to Canton.
The Destroyers cut off in Hong Kong on December 7, 1941 could
go to Canton and Bombard there if it is set correctly.
Canton is a more attractive target...Except it has mines and guns defense but
you would think that the task force could run in and out at night, with
Retirement Allowed and return to Hong Kong….but it won’t go there...
Because of the mines I suspect.
It will Bombard Canton if set to
Remain on Station and best to use threat tolerance
absolute.
For the test below I stood down all the Japanese air groups...that is why it is not more bloody
for the British Destroyers when they end up sitting there in the cold light of day.
I’m not much for suicide runs….the real Navy I was in tried to save as many lives as possible.
For me the best option is for the Destroyers to form up into three separate surface task forces
and make a full speed run along different paths to try and reach the Philippine Islands and then
on to the Makassar Strait.
Again...this is the reason that players should have a separate game install to practice
the mechanics of the game.
Every professional military in the world conducts extensive practice….and WITP-AE players
should as well…..but a surprising number of players of this game do not. They just wing it when
they set things up and then jump on the forum and ask... why did this happen?
I always remember the lessons from the
Godfather:
"Women and children can be careless, but not men." —
Don Vito Corleone

I was actually asking about Yaab's task force; yours was obvious from your post. But, I'm very surprised to learn BBs can go to Canton.

It may be that BB's can't go to Canton, I've not checked to see if that is true.
The map graphics could be wrong. It has happened before.

I have often bombarded enemy troops in non-base hexes. The biggest key to success is having a good DL on the target. If you do not have your own troops battling the enemy, you better have several recon passes and good enough weather. Even then, I think there may be a die roll to determine if the troops are within range or protected by terrain from a sea bombardment. Sometimes when all other factors seem good the bombardment just never happens so the conjecture is mine.

One less-thought of thing about bombardments (naval and air) is that it resets targeted enemy unit(s) (not all if there is stack) from op mode Move to Combat.
That drops the movement rate of the unit considerably and can be useful in some occasions (e.g. trying to get to some hex first or having extra day(s) to prepare defence.

Or messing up the retreat to Singapore since it can also change the move mode from Strategic to Combat, I do believe.

The effectiveness of bombardments is often underestimated. Not only do they allow you to tamper with the movements, but one of their main effect IMVHO is the amount of disruption you cause in the unit (and the supply consumption). This won’t appear in the combat report, and so is often neglected, but you can increase the disruption of a division to the 50’s even if you only caused three squads to be disabled. I find destroyers great for that effect, as they fire many shots.
