Hey folks. I'm going out on a limb here..I'm not sure this is the right forum, but there seems to be quite a few miliatry saavy folks here. If it's not appropriate, perhaps someone from Maxis could give me the high sign and I'll pull it.

Now, that being said, I have a question about the Osprey...

I've been following some of the stories about this new a/c and I'm wondering. Wouldn't it just be better to design a better heliocopter to replace the current aging fleet? Nearly every article I read says something about "The Osprey will replace heliocopters in use since the Vietnam war". Ok, I can understand that. So build newer and better choppers.

Lou Helicopters have a built in speed limitaion that comes from the fact that as a rotor spins the rotors on one side are going forward relative to the copter while the rotors on the other side are going backwards ..ya see what i mean.. the relative difference of the airspeed of the rotors on opposite sides increases as the forward motion of the copter increases to the point that one side won't lift anymore .
then ya got the fuel efficency problem much more range per gallon on fixed wings than on copters ... so range and speed and to some extent payload since at low speeds copters can lift more per horsepower than at high speeds due again to the problem of the blades being more balanced in lift at low speeds and the need to carry less fuel due to fix winged efficency ... so all in all the V-22 Osprey carries more faster farther than any heliocopter you can design ... you ocould lift as much with a copter but never go as fast and as far .. hope this helps
