Sorry but I just cant find the answer on my own. If I upgrade the port, is the shipyard upgraded in any way as well?

No

Dadman is right, they are two separate issues. To upgrade the shipyard, you need to go to the industrial screen. To upgrade the port you simply need to click on the expand port button. The port is really an abstraction of the docking and handling facilities where the shipyard is a ship building/repair facility.

And only the Japanese have the capability to expand shipyards. Allied factories (a term which covers everything from heavy industry to aircraft manufacture to repair yards) can not expand or convert.

My understanding is that the model of aircraft produced in an Allied factory follows a pre-set plan - on a certain date one model ceases production and the factory switches to the next aircraft it will produce. The only intervention the Allied player can make is to turn off the change to another model (not allow "upgrading"). The existing model will continue to be produced AFAIK.

Is there any verification to what BBF has stated? If true, that is a VERY important piece of information.

It has been so since the game's launch.

That's why, when playing the Allied side, the game is far less complicated in terms of the economic strategy than it is when playing the Japanese.

Hit "i" or otherwise go to the "Intelligence" screen, look up the Allied aircraft by clicking on "Aircraft Replacement Pool" and then you can see on the left the model of the aircraft and on the right what the model aircraft upgrades that upgrades to. By then looking at the "Production Rate" with the "Rate" below the "Production" then you can see the size of the factory for that model of aircraft, then you can look at the factory when the one model is discontinued to see that the production of the other model starts.

Been playing AE since it came out and never knew I could choose to NOT upgrade the production of a particular plane type.

I certainly do not remember any AARs talking about doing that - but hey, I'm old so I guess I just didn't pick up on it.

But I will now!!

Thanks.

A lot of Japanese players do not upgrade to the Val-2 and will push hard for the Judy-3.
