Formation Editor?

How do I invoke the new formations that are available now?
I've looked at the 3.3.5 Formation Editor section in the manual and it was not helpful.
I see the dropdown for the formation types but when I select it the ships don't get updated stations.

They may have fixed this in 1307.1 (the fix patch they just released into beta).
Take a look at my screenshots-there is are assign and place buttons. I don't see both in your UI, so maybe this is it?

I have a ghosted 'assign' button that's active when I select a unit. However I can't seem to do anything with it.

Have you updated to the newest version of the game. You're screenshot looks like one version older.

The first time you start up a CMO session, make sure you select a ship in the formation editor. That activates the buttons. I don't think you have to do it after that.
