I saw some videos on Youtube and the general consensus is that, yes, it is basically 80%-90% Advanced Squad Leader. It still lacks some basic things (like deploying smoke IIRC) and some phases are reduced to a single one, but if you know ASL you already know how to play SF. The developers already announced expansions involving other nationalities and new terrains, like desert and jungle. I think that I’ll wait for a bit but I guess that I’ll buy it. The Steam Workshop integration alone (paired with the map and scenario editor) is a big incentive. OTOH: no MP. I can see how - as expected - there are already fifteen versions of “Retaking Vierville” in the workshop. These ports, however, forget how ASL’s scenarios are finely balanced for two players, something that puts the AI at a disadvantage. Other scenarios, however, are built with one side specifically in mind, so I guess that they will be more of a challenge.
Anyway, this is a game that screams “MP!” I hope that it will be implemented soon.
