Question regarding pockets

Dear Wargamers,
I am a bit confused about isolating units in pockets. I am building quite huge pockets around sowjet forces. Let`s say I build a pocket around Minsk and trapping around 20 units (which I could cleary see) effectively isolating them. But when I clear the pockets there seems to be much less units inside the pocket. I just finished off about 12-15 units. But there had to be over 20. Can enemy units somehow slip through my defenses? Can they rout out of the pocket?

Well it depends.
If you want to clear the pocket within the same turn as you have built it, the units will still often rout outside of it, because they are not isolated yet.
You need to at least wait for one turn, to securely be able to clean it up IF you could keep them isolated. Check this with the Keyboard "Shift-r", isolated units will be show on the map with a red frame.
This is the catch, if a unit during the soviet turn was able to break the isolation, this is the opportunity for all units within that same pocket to again rout out of the pocket. The moment the isolation is broken, the (in your case soviet) player has also the option to disband/relocate units within that area.
Air groups can always leave the pocket w/o problems.
Hope this helps
Terry

Thanks for the info. Then it must be just a wrong perception by me. Units are isolated (bordered in red as stated above). Maybe I just remember it wrong how many units are trapped inside. I just play 1 turn a week so it seems I just forgot the actual amount of trapped units. Time to set up a oldschool checklist

HQs can relocate/rout out of pockets, they are never destroyed.

They can be destroyed in a pocket. Few know it but I can show example if needed if you don't believe my word.

They shouldn't be according to the manual, but do give the example.

The manual..
Just like artificial sweeteners were safe...
WMD's were in Iraq...
and Anna Nicole married for love...
There are things that are "not" in the manual but happen in the game. As can be seen here we all know that 3rd Army starts on the map. It was destroyed turn 7 in a pocket and will be back as a reinforcement on turn 15 having been destroyed. I know the circumstances why but I am sure others can explain now that I have shown it.

I mean, can you not just explain it? Did it shatter? Did it have something to do with displacement distance? Was it in a city fort?

I'm pretty sure it's being in an isolated city fort will destroy the HQ, but then it returns.

Some isolated depleted units automatically surrender. Or the AI has used super hero powers.
