Stop spies being auto dismissed

As the topic suggests, is there a way to stop spies being dismissed by the automation algorithm?
I thought I had a decent grasp of the game, but this one thing infuriates me to no end where my best spies just get dismissed without my input.

In my case, it was generals that would show up and be dismissed a short time later... Repeatedly for no reason.

Characters are dismissed when their total skills are below zero (negative effects).
But this will only happen when characters are automated. So you can either turn off character automation completely, or individually set specific characters to be manually-controlled.

Thanks for answering.
Character management seems quite important and rewarding, therefore it would not hurt if the algorithm asked the player about this action? Suggest rather than immediately execute?
The game painstakingly asks about every single new mining station to be built, but dismisses characters very frivolously.
I think this is a little frustrating.

I think there is some bug with generals in particular... automation was firing all my generals all the time for no reason so I had to stop it by setting them to manual.

I'm seeing the same thing here regarding Generals. I should check my automation settings, but the revolving door for generals is spinning really fast in my game.
