Op Mo done, still hazy on support

I finished Scenario 6, Operation Mo, with a decisive victory, but I'm still hazy on how support works. I gave up on the idea of keeping Gili Gili but instead flew 57th Engineers into Lunga. Then I sent the carrier TF and surface action group right into Lunga to repel the invasion. There weren't even any survivors wading ashore.
The funny thing was that even with 2 base forces (the 102 from Espiritu Santo and the 1st Noumea reinforcement), support never broke 200 and was always in the red. I finally removed the engineers and all but 1000 of the 132 RCT. I got the port up to 2 or 3, though not til late, and the airfield was a 4 or 5, if that makes any difference. What gives?

support

Hi, There are two kinds of support
Air and ground
Air you need equal to number of aircraft at base.
Ground you get from HQ units. (When you look at a ground unit support will always be in red) When you look at the base it will be in red unless you have HQ units with enough support there.

So for air move more Baseforce
For base/ground move HQ

(You do not always need to move the entire HQ. Just have transports airlift HQ to base untill enough support present)

Also SWPAC HQ has air support as well as ground support

So instead of moving in a 2nd Base Force, I should have moved part of the Americal Div. HQ? That does make sense, although I hadn't tried it because 2 RCTs were still sitting in Noumea.
Thanks,

Most regiments will belong to a division which, if grouped with the HQ will be self-sufficient as far as support requirements.

Base units and the like are often self sufficient, so if you move them to a base that needs support the base unit will only have enough support to take care of itself, but not lend support to the needy units. Find out what headquarter unit the needy units report to and draw your support from that source.
