frustration with "cruise mode"

I have just started the game. Looks great so far. The tutorial mentions ships using cruise mode to double their range. I follow the instructions without any success. Please advise...

Did you try clicking on the ship and then clicking on the "naval cruise" button? The hexes you can move to will be highlighted on the map. Then you have to click on the hex you wish to move to. Clicking twice on a ship also brings up the highlighted hexes you can move to in cruise mode.
