Pieceful way to win?

My experience is still limited. But it seems that with the standard victory conditions you sooner or later have to attack most other empires if you want to win, including close allies. Pieceful expansion and attacking only aggressive empires (e.g. the Boskarans as the Ackdarians) does not allow me to control 70% of space or planets. This seems to be a bit against role playing. Is this true? Do people therefore adjust those conditions or simply set their own goals?

I set my own goals, and disable the official ones in most games.

The empire winning conditions for Teekans are the way for a pieceful win. There may be others, I haven't played enough.

Thanks. But these race specific victory conditions are only a part of the overall condition, where territory, colonies and the size of the economy matter (in the default settings at least).

Yeah, I have to admit, I largely ignore the victory conditions for myself and play it more like a Paradox grand strategy game, where I just decide if the current game has played itself out to my satisfaction.

I do try to prevent other empires from achieving theirs, though, since it can add some interesting objectives to the game. In DW:U, one of the hive races has an objective of keeping their original leader/queen alive for the entire game. They were about to achieve victory, so I made a concerted effort to kill their queen. I wasn't strong enough to actually invade their homeworld, but I'd do hit-and-run bombardments against it, all while sending in my spies on suicide assassination missions. One of those spies actually got lucky and took her out, preventing their imminent victory. Was good fun! :D
