The Elo rating system is a mathematical method for calculating and ranking the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games. It was originally used in chess and backgammon and then moved on to other games. It was originated by Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor and chess player. Hence the name Elo.
