While this sounds right, and in most cases when a player creates a defect design manually, this is the way to go, if a player wants to change an existing defect design, they are not always able to do so. Defect designs are acquired through repair or capture on a regular basis.

At least renaming and changing the retrofit path should always be possible.

Otherwise, you'll be stuck with designs until you've solved the defect, which can take a long time depending on which component you need to research high up in the tech tree.

I have repaired a defect ship of my race. While I can upgrade the design - I've researched hull tech - the defect design still won't upgrade to the new design, but will remain at (None).
