When I attempted to draw a picture of a staring ship, I get this error:

Access violation at address 0044F168 in module 'RTW3.exe'. Read of address 00000004.

Turns out I get this error if I click any button. I am running the steam version.

Lets narrow this down a bit if we can:

a) At what point does the error popup? Does it occur when you click on any button, or only after a certain button is pressed, or at some other point?

b) Does the error popup every time after it first appears, or it sporadic and sometimes clicking the button does not produce the message?

c) Does this do this in every game? Try starting a new game and see if the same thing occurs.

It starts on the first screen after starting a game.

The same error message comes on the first and every other attempt to press a button.

It occurred every time I tried to start the game.

You may have a corrupted game installation. Have Steam verify the game files and see if it finds + corrects any files:
