I'm in the Northern Fury campaigns. F-15Cs shooting at enemy Yak-141s. Once the missiles fired, I watched as the AIM-7M Sparrow IIIs all begin to slow down in speed moment they were launched. As you would guess, they petered out well before their maximum range.

It's what missiles actually do. It was recently added to command. It's called Boost-Coasting.

Most missiles don't actually have enough fuel to burn their motor very long, so alot of the distance they cover is actually on lift and momentum from that first burning period.

With most AAMs, it's not a good idea to actually fire at maximum range, unless maybe the target is slow, on a constant course, and has no way of detecting you or the missile before impact, and it's closing on you as opposed to moving away.
