A Couple of Surprises

I had subs, surface ships and a CV within 5 hexes of Narvik. The surface ships were in hexes 168,93 and 169,92. Only the CV attempted interceptions and sank one division on transports and damaged another division on transports. Doesn't look like the surface ships and subs even tried an interception. Is it because a transport or naval groupd can only be successfully intercepted once in a turn?
Also, for his damaged division to reach Narvik the transport would have to sail in to and through the above two hexes where I had surface ships. Seems odd that when you try to enter a hex containing enemy warships with friendly warships you can't, yet here we have a transport sail through two enemy occupied hexes in to Narvik. Are coastal hexes treated differently than ocean hexes?
Quite unrealistic that unescorted transports can sail through enemy warships in to Narvik.

You cannot think of ships as being in a single hex for an entire turn (two weeks). Abstractions and all that

Yes, in a destination hex (here Narvik), only one naval interception can be attempted for each enemy arriving fleet. So the only reason to have more fleet, would be if one expect more enemy fleet coming to the same hex one after the other (as each fleet can only succeed 2 interception per turn IIRC). In small fleet scenario, it can be necessary in some cases, much less so in the large fleet scenario.

For your second question, Sveint answered very well already.

this happened to me once in a game with Nirosi. i parked a fleet in interception range, and for good measure moved two old subs.

of course, only the subs intercepted, they missed, my fleet sat idly by.

i'm fairly sure i cried excessively and embarrassingly about it in my AAR

you are right-only one interception can be attempted

As long as Interception is controlled by computer, it will never be right. Perhaps Lua scripting of the player each turn can do something right. Or, adding user friendly conditions to clear states which fleet do what.
