I'm told this can e played PBEM .... Yet there is no Opponent Wanted section on this forum ....

It is true - this game can be played PBEM - and I'll go a step further and assert that as good as SE is solo, it is much, much better PBEM, with four players (three opponents) if you can find them.

It is also true, and odd, that there is no Opponents Wanted section here. Probably just an oversight.

If you can tolerate Discord (which I struggle to do), this might be your best bet:

There is a healthy running discussion thread and PBEM activity and even a thread for organizing games.

Pity, a SiFi game which is PBEM friendly is so unique ......

I hear ya - I find Discord a very difficult, poor discussion implementation - the discussions tend to be multiple, running streams of consciousness all intertwined with each other making for a garbled thread. Very difficult to follow people's trains of thought on discord.

But, I go there from time to time only because there is a lot very good SE info (in the vein of not throwing out the baby with the bath water type of thing.)

Pbem is very easy with discord:

- You have 1 channel per game
- you drag and drop your savegame

Thats it
Very easy to organize new games, and there are many active games

The SE discord community is very great and active, a lot of info and interesting discussions.

Thanks for weighing in relative to the Discord approach, though my experience is different ....

My real question is focused on why there is no Opponents Wanted on this website like all other games .... Vic ?

I'm also old school PBEM gamer. Tried Discord, but never get used to it. There is no valid reason for not having an "Opponents Wanted" subforum for this game.

Quit playing Dominions 5 PBEM because everyone went there.

It would be even better if there was a built in utility that would manage matchmaking and transferring of saves. Having to do it by email, ugh.

Seriously? you're giving up the game entirely because there's not opponents wanted section on a forums?
You'll miss a lot of great things in life with that approach.

I hate to see any player go, but especially over such a trivial reason.

I've seen people giving up on a game because of the existence of a mod you could choose to not implement and that would have zero effect on the game played by opponents. A pure graphics mod. But I've never seen anyone quit over a lack of forum subsection.

Have never used Discord for 'pbem' games...there is no need to.

I mean, if we look at the Opponents Wanted section of Vic's Decisive Campaigns: Ardennes Offensive (released Nov 18 2021), the section has 19 topics total, and the last post is 7 months old. Quite a lot less than DC Barbarossa (Nov 24 2015) which had 59 topics.

Shadow Empire is probably a lot more popular, but still it's clear that Discord will inevitably pull most of the PBEM forum activity away.

Creating your own "Opponents Wanted" threads in the main SE forum would probably be completely fine, since judging from the above there probably wouldn't be many of them? (And if there will be, it should make the case for a separate section credible.)

My apologies .... didn't mean to come across winey ... but I can see that ..... My issue was finding opponents for pbem w/o discord ..... how have others achieved this ????? Won't play against the computer other than to learn the basics .... true for any game I have .....

Most SiFi games are single player only, so the community might not really need opponent wanted .... but if you're going to offer this capability, still baffles me why not add it .... If there are alternate (non Discord approaches) would love to know ...

Well, maybe that's partly on us. It's easy to hear stuff that way since whining is so common online

If you're just looking for a pbem game (vs. a discussion about lack of an opponents wanted section), I recommend starting an "I'm starting a PBEM game - looking for opponents" thread. I'll bet you'll find folks.

(I'd happily join in except I'm already wrapped up in two pbem games and pbem can go for many months.)

No need to apologize, I was just addressing your comment on how 'mp' was limited to Discord & to assure you it was not.
