Not grasping "Force" & Missions

I'm trying to work through the Missions in Battle Planning. What I am not getting is how "Force" relates to "Mission."

I have a Force that consists of a regiment HQ, a subordinate Motor Rifle Battalion and a subordinate artillery battalion. Each of those battalions have subordinates.

When I try to give a Mission of "Defend in Place" to an MRC in the MRB, the program gives that mission to the force HQ, the regimental HQ and ever unit in the force then gets that mission. I don't understand how to give subordinates in a force, their own missions. I suspect that I did not structure the force properly, is that so?

Does each element that I wish to get a specific mission be a separate force? If so, how to preserve chain of command?

If I do need to restructure my force, can I edit the units I already have into separate forces? If so, how?

When I make my scenarios, for NATO I make each company its own force. For WP I generally make each battalion its own force. It doesn't affect C of C. Then I can give different orders to each company in a battalion for example. Sometimes I make single counter a force, if for example I want a FOO to move on its own rather then following the orders of a higher HQ. I may want it to follow a Mech Coy but not exactly the same path to the obj.

When you are making your force you can initially have the entire battalion for example as one force, and then change each sub unit into its own force.

Not sure my explanations make sense but if you have any questions I can try to help. In the meantime, I'd suggest that you watch the Matrix Games YouTube videos on how to create a scenario. I found them very useful.

Thanks.

I went and spent the afternoon making a straightforward Movement to Contact scenario and do now see that each force you want to have separate orders needs to be a "force" and that the chain of command into affected by such. It worked.

I did watch the videos, but this aspect did not come clear to me until working it out.

Concrete example using a WP regimental recon company consisting of the following::
1. Company HQ
2. Heavy recon plt (3 x IFV or 3 x tank)
3. Light recon plt (2 x BRDM)
4. Light recon plt (2 x BRDM)

If these are in the same Force, then, regardless of initial deployment, they will assemble together and then move on the Force's mission set. This means the entire company on one axis.

If you put them each in their own Force and you give each Force a different mission set and path, you can push them forward and recon a zone or multiple routes.

Whatever forces you put in a Force are bound together in that Force's mission set.
