What strategies do you use to manage planet side garrisons?

I find that if i leave it on auto the AI bankrupts me, but if put it on manual with some automated troopships the troops are spread over planets but not to the levels i would like, or on the planets i want.

Ideally i would like to specify garrison levels or unit types on specific planets but the army designer doesbt seem to support that. You can specify percentages but not unit counts, and its not clear at all how many units would be assigned to garrison duty.

In the end, i just end up doing everything completely manually.

Like I wrote in the past there should be a garrison defense strength setting.

Also, after all the time its still not fixed that you cannot build Robotic Troops in Robotic Troop Foundry at new conquered Worlds until you assimilated enough of the population to be able to recruit their native Troops anyway.
