Surprising Sub Hunter Bonus

In our last PBEM turn, the Allies received a +8 sub hunter bonus resulting in the sinking of a U-Boat group (5). There were two DD's in raider mode on a convoy route hex within 24 of the attacking subs so I would have expected +2. No Allied air were in range of the U-boats and according to the manual they would need the Detection tech for the bonus. No Allied CVs on a convoy route within 24 hexes either. There were 3 Allied CV's in Gibraltar that were within 24 hexes of the U-boats but they shouldn't have counted It is the largest bonus either of us have seen and don't remember 5 strength points of a sub being destroyed in one convoy attack. An anomaly or bug?

I have seen a full strength sub sink in a convoy attack before. No common, but far from impossible. The same way I have seen 10 MM sunk also in one attack. In a way it actually needs to be possible, if not not u-boats might be too hard to actually sink, if they never stay more than a turn at sea. A full u-boat sunk in one attack is exceptionaly rare in 1939, quite rare in 1940-41, rare in 42, not that rare in 43+ from my experience. And the more subs on the map, the more chances it happens of course.
I also have noticed ships in port giving their anti-sub bonuses as it seems that is what happened in your case (as then the +8 adds-up). This however might be a bug and not intended, no idea for sure. Alvaro would need to answer that.

What was the convoy escort tech level vs the submarine tech level? Also, something to consider.

sub vs escort tech is of vital importance.
If you want a good read on the battle of the Atlantic, Black May by Gannon shed a lot of light on the subject and is why my system is how it is for convoy attacks. I did have to modify it though as players were complaining it wasn't doing enough damage to the UK.
The original version we pretty historical.

Hi Alvaro,
I think the main question here was if naval units are supposed to give their sub-hunter bonus while in port. Right now they do it from inside the port, but we are not sure if they are supposed to do so or not.

I will look at the code.
And ponder the question

Sub hunter bonus....
I looked at the code..... patrol groups (DD groups in WPP) +1.
Air and CV groups +2
Now add on the tech
The escort bonus map clears every turn before it calculates.
Something had to be missed or misread. You sure you didn't read 8 escorts?

Does the air unit with D&E have to be within 24 hexes of the subs to count?

If I remember it is their range.
