I am a Battletech boardgame veteran. I sunk much money into the game, even though only my girlfriend would play. Then WotC buys them up and I abandone ship. I have wanted a computer version of the BT board game for many years, the Mechwarrior stuff is just too arcadey for me. Now I have kinda been watching this game out of the corner of my eye for a while and I plan on getting it on Wed. I do have a few questions.
1.)I am not expectiong BT the board game with just a different name, but are the two similar is game play mechanics. I looked at the website but the FAQ doesn't have anything.
2.)Are Death from Aboves possible?
3.)And most importantly, will the single player AI be anygood? I only have 56k and I typically play single player games. How is the AI? Also will 56k be enough for online play?
Sorry if these questions have been asked before, but I would like to here from those of you who have been following this game longer than I have.
Here is hoping that me table top dreams of mech goodness are about the be realized!!!

I've never played Battletech so I dunno how it compares. Download it and find out for yourself.

If you have a girlfriend that will play battletech type games though... Word. Does she have a sister?
DfA is not only possible, it's fun. Especially if you've got close combat weapons to rip off heads with called shots.
As far as online games, you could probably squeek by with an old 9600 modem.

56k is more bandwidth than ToS will ever use.
The AI in 1.4 is okay, not incredibly bright but acceptable. Humans are more fun to fight against in any case, since you can make them plead.

At the time she was my girlfriend, now she is my fiance`. And yes she does have sisters, however I would not wish them on anyone, vile vile beasts they are. I got the good one. I do not see an option for downloads. Are you talking about the old and ugly version? The offcial website has no downloads available, and EB says that it is coming out on Wednesday I think.

The general game system is similar to battletech, the core rule system is a bit different. The AI in WS should give you lots of intense fights. Since you can tweak the settings (give them a better rank or more tonnage) it should be enough challenge for 100+ hours. The AI is much better than in v1.4.

I checked the titansofsteel.de site and the Download Centre isn't active now. If you want to play the freeware version (version 1.4) before you get WS , I could copy it onto a CD for you. Easiest if you're in Europe.

Here are the answers to your questions:
1) similar but not the same. They are the same in genre.
2) yes to DFAs, charging, kicking, punching, and jumping forwards, upwards, downwards, and backwards. yeah you read right. I wrote backwards. Trust me, it beats landing in lava.
3)Single AI is excellent. One of the best aspects of TOS. its much better in TOSWS. There is a lot of single player action.
4) 56k modem is fine. you will need an connection to the internet.
Lan works good too.

There are a lot more Titans than there are battletech designs. Plus you can easily make your own designs and test them immediately or exchange them with others using a new xchange system as well as import them.
Pilots have a much better ranking system in TOSWS. If I remember right you only have 3 ranks in BT. IN TOS you have a lot more. And experience actually makes a huge difference.
Yesterday, I was playing a campaign mission with only 1 pilot in a recon against 3 other recons. I killed the three. How? Experience and a couple of lucky headshots with a tesla bolt.
The same happy accidents occur in multiplayer games.

I found 1.4 on some website last night. Thanks again for the help.
Just a few more questions.
Will WS be fullscreen? 1.4 is locked in that small window and there is not very much detail in the mechs and landscape? Will WS have fullscreen and at what resolutions? And has the detail been bumped up from v.1.4?
Thanks, this is very helpful.
I take that most of you are beta testers??

You can actually run 1.4 in either windowed or fullscreen, it depends on which icons you use to start it.
WS can be toggled between windowed and fullscreen during gameplay or any other screen.
The detail on WS is also much, much better than 1.4, although still recognizable as ToS. I play mine windowed, generally, so I can have other things going, at a 1600 x 1200 resolution, but it still looks great fullscreen.

v1.4 was limited to 256 colors, WS will be high/true color.

I was even alpha tester from the first hour of TOS when there was only the landscape and 1 titan which could only move forward without any animation.

Visit
Vicious Bytes TOS homepage and have a look at the screen shot link at the bottom.
Note that Matrixgames also registered
www.titansofsteel.com.

I have been fiddling around with 1.4 and saw the fullscreen option. Thanks. I thought that the graphics looked better than 1.4, but it is sometimes hard to tell by the screenshots. This looks like the game for me. My fiance` and I had 2 merc units going in the BT boardgame. We hired, fired, built mechs, and salvaged for hours. Most of the fun came from assigning experince to surviving mechwarriors and building them up. I still, even 6 years past now, remember the day that my leader of my Merc unit, my very first character, was blasted in the face with an Ultra AC/20 right smack in his Atlas' head. Sara was needless to say very excited that her 50 ton Blitzkrieg ended the 100 ton menace.
Also by the way, another aspect of Battletech that I found very enjoyable was the aspect of groud troops such as tanks, and battlesuits, and infantry. Is this planned or has it been discussed for WS or future versions?
Thanks!!!

If you loved to build your merc pilot you might love TOS. Now you have much more skills/attributes and a system which will make you happy advancing in rank/experience. Same is valid for the mech/titan factory. Its a game in a game to design your favorite titan and make it perfect for your jock. TOS is based on battletech but tries to improve on the system and did convince/convert old battletech fanatics. The core rule system is much more advanced and will give you lots of hours of fun, either solo, hotseat or in a network. I promise.

Thanks!! All this is helping very much but once again I just thought of something.
Will WS have a campaign or be mission based, or will it be like 1.4 and basicly nothing but quick battles?
Sorry if this is repetitive, but I am getting more and more excited?

TOS: WS will have three campaigns (7 maps each) as well as some stand alone missions. The last campaign will require an experienced squad so you have to advance through the other campaigns and/or random battles to finish it. Most missions will adept opposition according to your squads strength but some will have a fixed opposition. So you will definatly fail to beat the last campaign with a rookie squad. TOS: WS is v1.4 + better sound/grafics/core system/missions/campaigns/AI/interface/music/weapons/landscape/..../. If you know 1.4 think of it as Doom and TOS:WS will be Quake III.

Sounds like a winner.
Thanks for your patience.
1.) I noticed that a few mechs are named after older Robotech/Battlemechs. Is that some of the BT influence showing or merely coincidence?
2.) The max tonnage is 200 correct, it is pssible to convert old Battlemechs to Titans?
3.) Can you create or edit weapons to create those that are present in the BT world but not the WS world, or are most of them present already? Any notable weapons missing?
4.) What about infantry and vehicles?
5.) 1.4 can be difficult to get into, when coming from the IGOUGO system to the time based system. I am learning slowly by reading a few posts here and going over the documentation in 1.4. Will WS be streamlined any. I noticed a few graphical differences on the UI, but has the UI itself been streamlined?
Thanks again.

1) Some influence, sure. But mostly they are cool sounding names. There is some kind of "categorization" if you look closely.
2) Yep, you'll just have some room left to add electronics. There are a few in the database.
3) Larkin can, we can't

No LB-Xs, no Ultras, no RACs. But who needs them anyway?
4) ARGHH! Nope.
5) The UI has lots of small improvements, and a new look. New hotkeys, new functionalities, new displays, all to make your life easier. Terrain info/popups, color coded info, improved help screen, you name it.
As a side note, you can play either in 3D or 2D, with 3 different angles for 3D, and toggle the hex contours on/off. Each battlefield type has 2 distinct textures.
