No message when ship is 1shot-sunk by torpedo

So occasionally, a torpedo instantly sinks a ship.
1) Is this WAD? Are torpedos supposed to either immediately (!) sink an enemy ship and/or detonate its magazine?
2) Why is the magazine detonated/ship is sinking popup omitted in this case?
I had it happen a few times now that a ship of mine (or the enemy) is hit by a torpedo. Per my standard procedure, I then search for the ship and detach it and set it on manual to make sure that the AI does not sink the ship with high speed flooding. But sometimes the ship can't be found because it has been instant-sunk.
I don't have a save right now but it should be easy enough to check this out in the code, and I am 100% sure it happened as described.
