Unless I'm missing something, I can't find a way to abandon or sell them. For example, Germany starts with the Marshall Islands. I'd love to not have them. History has a lot of examples where Colonies were sold etc. Perhaps a future update will have a way to get rid of ones you don't want.

You can't let a colony leave voluntarily until the request independence, which starts about 1950.

However, you can increase the chances of a rebellion by not meeting tonnage requirements in a sea zone and get rid of colonies that way (though you will also suffer prestige hits from complaints about not meeting the tonnage requirements).
