I cant find anything in the rulebook (or the forum) that addresses this.

Is there an actual reason to NOT put your ships in "raider" mode? Are they more effective in naval combat not in raider mode? And if there is no difference then why isnt raider mode the default (like subs)?

About the only reason to have the raider mode set to off, is if you want your ship placed on or adjacent to a convoy lane for some reason, but you don't wish to raid that turn, thus burning supply and possibly flagging your location to the enemy with a "?" Say, you're in cruise mode trying to shake pursuit and you want to get the most mileage out of that run but that last hex just happens to be on or next to a convoy lane. You might want the option not to raid there.

However, on or off, it doesn't effect naval combat.

I would prefer that the raider mode be the default mode for all ships, in all of the Strategic Command games. The few ships that one doesn't want to be raiders can easily be turned off.

They seem to have taken your advice in a recent patch to Strategic Command: Civil War, where all gunboats now start in raider mode by default.

Agree. Honestly the option to turn off raider mode for surface ships is very very rarely useful.
