Air units won't attack enemy air contacts with their guns when giving the order

Hello folks,
I'm currently in the 2nd mission of Shifting Sands.
Sending up a few Mirages manually without a mission. A few have one AA missile. Once these missiles are away, the Mirages turn back and want to RTB with full guns.... The F1 order (auto-attack) just doesn't work, it seems that nothing works. Guns-only Mirages do nothing as well.
I give them a move order with F3 and expect them to attack & ignore the plotted F3 order when I tell them to with F1 auto-attack.
I seem to be not able to issue commands for one to attack the lead with guns while the other attacks the wingman. I try to do this manually. How?
I want them responsive. How to achieve that? I looked in the doctrin but it doesn't seem to change anything. I "unassign" their damn RTB-status just for them to evade MiGs and RTB again whenever they can instead of killing them.
Or: F3-move order towards a location seem to make them go back after arrival instead of loitering at this point. How to do that without a mission?
Greetings,
Cabal
