I'm in battle with an enemy ship. Night falls, and the enemy is suddenly out of visible range and disappears. Next turn, an "unidentified ship" shows up right where he ought to be. Why won't my idiot gunners open fire? I've had whole squadrons pass right by each other at biscuit toss range and nobody fired a shot.

You would not want to shooting fishing boats, would you ?

Or even your own ships.... Remember that the game still give you the exact position of all your ships, even in admiral mode. Which is a gamey simplification .

Imagine a hard core admiral mode where you cannot even know what your own ships are doing in some circumstances
