Ships go on AI, do stupid stuff

My destroyers are fleeing from an unfortunate encounter with an enemy cruiser. One destroyer is badly damaged and the cruiser is eating him. Another one is less badly damaged, falls behind my fleeing formation and goes on AI. And turns back to go help his friend. So he gets sunk too, rather than successfully running to port (and blowing up an enemy DD that we find along the way, meaning that the encounter would have been a draw). Any way to stop this? Give a ship an order that they are required to follow even if they get out of sight of the flag?

Thanks for the report! Do you have screenshots and save file you could share with us that demonstrates the behavior?

There doesn't seem to be any way to save a situation and go on playing, I'm sorry. Unless I'm missing something. It would be a nice feature to be able to save in a different slot, btw.
I have noticed this a number of times and mostly this was a request for a feature rather than a bug report - I'd like to be able to give a ship an order to follow a particular course of action that they will persist in under AI control (for example, to return to port as quickly as possible, or to go to a particular spot and scout).

Have you tried out captain's mode? You can solve most of those problems if you are willing to do some micromanagement of ships and divs.
