I managed to defeat numerous attacks as I rose to power in an underpopulated galaxy. I did the max star and grid size in a spiral with only 15 civilizations. It was kind of fun to feel lonely in the universe at first as well as have endless exploration throughout the game.
It did turn into a bit of a slog. A cool experiment but not one I think I would repeat.
