So you can add planes, but sometimes there are more planes than allowed, is it possible to remove them?

You should be able to remove the excess planes by sending them to the pools. There may be a delay before they show up in the pools.

What type of squadrons are you referring to? Allied or Japanese?....GP

Both really, and the pool button only adds, no arrow going the other way

When you remove them from the squadrons, they go to the pools.

What they are not telling you is that you can split the squadron into thirds, and disband the split sub-units. Makes sure the ones you are keeping are set to "no replacements" to keep them from trying to get back to squadron TOE.

Naval Squadrons, while on a ship, can be resized using the button in the upper left of the units screen. Some units will resize depending on scenario settings. For example, some US Marine squadrons will resize from 18 to 24. While others have the ability to be customized in size....GP

I resized some of my squadrons downward but there was no mechanism to send the now-surplus planes to the pools. So they decrease in size by attrition in battle or ops.

If you resize to a level low enough, the extra aircraft with show up as reserve aircraft and you can send those to the pools, although they may not show up immediately.

RJ, Correct. It takes a few days to show in the pool, most of the time. Some show up at once. Look at the ops report to see aircraft on there way to the pool....GP

I find that sometimes the game will let you return Reserve aircraft to the pools and sometimes it won't. Don't know why. Air HQ?

Try this Air War Guide and if it's not there let me know.

The Air War Guide deals with drawing aircraft into the unit but not returning aircraft to the pool when you are not withdrawing or disbanding the whole unit. On the Allied side, when I have a new unit arrive with extra aircraft in the unit's reserve, I often want to return the reserve aircraft to the pool for units that are short of that same aircraft. The new unit usually needs to train for at least 3 months anyway, so it does not need them. Sometimes it lets me return them, sometimes not. Haven't been able to see a pattern because new units don't arrive all that often.

The only a/c you can remove from a squadron are reserve a/c. There's no mechanism for removing other a/c, except in the case of naval squadrons that can be resized, as General Patton has noted above.

There's also the workaround that BBfanboy has described, but that's only available to squadrons that can be split. Not every squadron can be split.

BTW, in my extensive experience (stock scenario 1, Allies vs AI Japan, now in its seventh year), I can't recall ever seeing a squadron show up with more a/c that it's supposed to have. It's normally the case, especially in 1942, that a squadron shows up with far fewer a/c than it's supposed to have. Just my observation.

TY dmaramba, you gave me the answer I was looking for. But yes it happens with a plane or two sometimes

Thought it did but I'll check and add it.

Didn't, does now.
