Why don't I know where my convoy is?

I know there's a little flag on the map, but I should be able to see where the convoy is and what kind of ships it's got when I start a convoy defense scenario. I've occasionally been in a position where I'm trying to decoy the enemy away from the merchies and lo and behold, there's the damn convoy right ahead of me.

Why should you?
It's a separate force that isn't under your direct control.
Your shadowing force has limited contact with the convoy, and is reliant on positional reports from the convoy and it's close escort.

Maybe you should have a better idea when you have radios. It just seems odd that, like I said, I can come up with a strategy for the encounter that involves leading the enemy away from the convoy and mistakenly head right for it, because it was actually nowhere near the big target painted on the ocean at the beginning of the mission. I imagine that if a squadron was sent out to protect a convoy, they would have some idea of where that convoy was. They should at least have more information than the enemy.

When you look at the force list on the left you see the convoy force and you see where they are roughly when you click on one of the ships in the force.
