Battle generator setting up CVs in dangerous spots

Post by thedoctorking »

I've mentioned this a couple of times in posts but I thought I'd give you guys an example with a save. The battle generator (after assuring me that an intelligence coup had delivered the enemy into my hands) deployed my carriers in the little bay just to the south of their position in the image.

Notice the wind direction. They are totally embayed, even trying to launch CAP for their own defense will leave them running into Japan. Instead of important assets to my force, they have been converted into a row of defenseless, huge, expensive targets. The enemy is very close, only 40 nm or so away to the northeast. If they detect me, they won't even need planes to take me out; their (quite adequate) cruise missile technology will do the trick.

CV's should _never_ be deployed within 50 nm or so of the shore or of enemy forces unless the intent is to depict an ambush of the force. They should generally be somewhere where they have a lot of searoom to windward because they're going to use it launching and retrieving planes. No carrier admiral would put his precious boats, the pride of the fleet, into any situation like this.

Ctrl-alt-delete is your friend as a player in situations like this, but you guys can do better.

I played the scenario out to see what would happen. Turns out the enemy force was also basically composed of CVs, deployed within a few nm of my forces with our cruise missiles. I navigated my carriers through the Tsugaru Straits with the cruisers protecting them, and then launched a devastating strike that sank both of the enemy carriers.

It is also deploying CVs in Screen or Search Line formations, which are illegal for those types of ships. If you have a battle type where controls are frozen, you can't change this and you can't change the subordination or any other characteristic of the CV unit because you get the error message "screen formation is not permitted for CVs" and it won't let you make any other changes, you have to cancel out. This is not fatal, usually, although I did have that nasty moment where my CVs wandered off by themselves while their destroyers hung around in the center, like the CV's were screening the DDs.
