Defending the Reich

No matter what I try, I can't seem to do much better than keeping about 1,000 fighters in each West, OKW, and OKH. (not to mention 300+ in Ploesti)
It seems the fighters from those HQ's are set up to defend in only one direction each. Seems kinda hokey and gamey to me.

For instance, you'd think 1,000 fighters could defend in a circular area if say it was situated in Kassel from the west edge of the map, east to Berlin, and south to Munich. I tried it with a spare hq, and got nothing but lost production for my troubles.

Currently, my fortress has a roof (43' scenario)...a very expensive roof, and my air units in the east are just holding their own, except where my opponent decides to throw his Red Guard units.
The Axis Allies are bearing the brunt of it all in the east.

Has anybody got a definitive answer to defending against the bombers with less than 18 Jagdgeschwader?

Surrendering in 42 is always an option ;) :D

Starting in 41 the USAAF problem isn`t that big, you can move enough trained units to the west and south to keep the USAAF weak, but starting in 42 the USAAF is nearly invincible. Guess the only way to beat the USAAF is to win in the east.

West front should cover Hamburg to Munich and eastwards up to Magdeburg - at least with Fw190A and some Me-110
But you'll need at least one HQ in/around Berlin - either OKW or OKH but not both

But you'll need another one to cover Hungary and one in Ploesti

There is no way you can weaken the USAAF. It will eventually bomb Germany not matter what.

I would assume you have your fighters in CAP. This gives the fighters a range of 20.

As for the Bf-110s, they will not intercept, even in CAP, if dogfight value <17 + (year-1941). Which means that if the fighter has a dogfight value of 18, it will defend only until 1942 (17+1=18).

Cheers

Hmmm - I have Me110 intercepting bombers in 1943 and 1944

The Bf-110 interception formula was taken from the Readme.txt file. Look in the "Change in v2.003" section. There is nothing telling you otherwise after that.

I also saw that the Bf-110s were not intercepting bombers I think in 3.2.

My succersful recepy to the above problem was to early meet the USAAF with overwhelming superiority already in 42. Currently playing in 1943. I have stationed arround 300 machines in Germany, 250 machines in France (WF) and 250 machines in Rumania since day one. All of them are now Fw190 which are superior to ME109 in this role. The only place USAAF has managed to get through is infact in the suthern part of Germany and in Czekoslovakia and thouse time I can count on one hand.

Cheers.

If you place a HQ half way between Munich and Vienna, and place 200+ fighters there on CAP, it will intercept attacks on Budapest, Prague, Munich, Vienna, and Nurnburg. Make sure it's within 7 hex's of the above mentioned cities.....When the summer of 44 comes, don't leave your quality fighters in the western front HQ, if the front shatters, so do your fighters.
