I know this was a thing in WW2 for convoy escorts without small carriers. They would equip a Hurricane or similar elderly fighter so that it could be launched by catapult when German long-distance naval strike planes would near the convoy. The fighter would take the enemy on, then ditch where the pilot could be picked up (maybe). The Japanese, I think, equipped their float planes to do the same job for their merchies and other ships without carrier escort. Any way to do this in game? Although you can equip them for bombing missions, there doesn't seem to be any way to convince float planes to do CAP missions.
