What is the protocol for using other's work - including old scenarios and new scenarios?

- fixing/overhauling a scenario
- using an OOB to edit for a new version
- using a map to create a different scenario

I would like to know if there is formal protocol also.
In one case where I used parts of the OOB of an existing scenario, I contacted the original designer and asked for permission to use OOB. The designer was no longer active and did not respond so I gave him credit in the scenario description.

This topic has been discussed before. As I understand the process:

1. If the modified scenario is only for your use, there is no requirement to contact the original author.
2. If you intend to make the changes public, contact the original author and proceed based on the author’s wishes. Edit scenario briefing per step 3.
3. If the original author is not available modify and post as follows:
In the scenario briefing acknowledge that the scenario is based on the original author’s work.
In the scenario briefing identify the changes.
Rename or add a version number so that the modified scenario is readily distinguished from the original scenario.

In my experience authors have been overwhelmingly positive to having their work updated and/or used for development of new scenarios.
