"A Kona Low has been hammering Hawaii over the last 24 hours, dropping enormous amounts of rain and even snow on the high peaks.

Mauna Kea has seen a half a foot of snow, and nearly 20 inches of rain fell this morning just southeast of Hilo on the Big Island."

There maybe more to come . . .

Snow at Mauna Kea is not that rare. It's not the latitude (19N), but the altitude (13796 ft).

I was in U.S.M.C. In the 80's.
We were on the Big Island doing training and it snows often
on the mountains.

One morning at the crack of dawn I see a mushroom cloud. Like atomic
blast. In the 80's there was the fear of commies drop nuke on pearl harbor.

But it was the volcano erupting for the first time in xx years.
I believe the volcano is active to this day.
