Bought Wars in the Americas today but cannot install it. When I use the Check for Updates function in the Strategic Command American Civil War launcher, the system tries to install v1.09 and fails because that is only available to US customers. I need v1.05.

I have a downloaded file containing v1.05 as a result of buying the game but this doesn't seem to work (can't extract, move or copy it and wouldn't know where to, anyway). Presumably, it just doesn't work that way and you need to choose Check for Updates, which brings us back to the original problem, above.

Sorry to hear of the issue, although everyone should be on the same version, i.e. there aren't separate versions for different regions.

The best thing to do will be to contact Matrix Games support as hopefully they'll be able to help you get it installed asap:
