Minors "unified" or "annexed" suddenly unsupplied

What is up with a minor nation that was independent and functioning well on its own, joins my country, and suddenly is out of supply because it can't trace supply back to the SHQ?! This is unrealistic that a former minor country suddenly forgets how to support itself until I can build a supply route to its capital.

It still supplies its militia even without being linked to the SHQ.

Isn't unrealistic, just awkward interface. You can both choose to supply them from their zone or create a new SHQ, and possibly buy needed items in zone, otherwise your orders are assumed to "do not supply the troops until connected".

How does one "supply them from their zone"?

Call the governor and enable that option.

It should be noted though that in 99% of cases this is not something you should be doing. 1 SHQ should be enough for any situation within the vanilla game, and your SHQ should be in charge of all supplying. If you're somehow annexing clients that aren't connected to your own logistics network then them forgetting to supply themselves is the least of your problems. Commanding and controlling the logistical network within your nation (and that includes any recently annexed territories) is half the game.

I understand that this game runs everything back through the SHQ, but that is besides the point. That a minor was self-sufficient before merging is suddenly unsupplied just because it joined my country makes no logical sense and is a game flaw that should be corrected. A game this focused on logistics should be better than this.

Yes, this is a facet of the game that is very annoying and has been like that since day one.
With the more recently added ability to supply from a zone, perhaps newly subsumed minor-nation zones should have "Allow suppling units if shortfall" checked off by defaulted to provide a more seamless transition as the minor is integrated into the major nation. I'm not sure how seamless that would actually be in practice, however, since the AI "cheats" (another annoyance) regarding logistics.

I've noticed in my games that AI forces surrounded by my troops seem to get stronger (their overall "strength" number reflected during the AI turns grows). If my units are no/low supply, they dwindle in strength till they are gone unless supplied, yet AI units continue to survive and thrive while cut off.

Yes, this is one of the bigger gripes I (and many) have with the game. You must play the AI with very different tactics than you do for another human player. When you can't cut off supply, it reduces the value of mobility and makes the tactical approach more of a slog-n-pound campaign. It's unfortunate - I wish Vic could get past that one.

This is only a big concern for AI Minor, yeah? Though it is still a bit tricky to cut logi against AI majors due to their road budgets.

Ummmm i have managed many times to fully surround minor AI troops and watch them eventually starve to death. It just takes longer than major AI, i think? I think they carry more food with them or something. Not sure.

I'm not sure if minors have any rules specifically pertaining to starvation, as they don't have SHQs or zone inventories (to my knowledge). Normally what happens on my end is that they grind themselves down attacking the entrenched units I have surrounding them.
