Quick Animation in Single Player games

This is greyed out and cannot be changed when starting a SP game - at least, it is for me. It can be toggled in Hotseat mode. It means that sometimes the actions of the AI cannot be seen and I only get to observe the results e.g. a 10-strength unit ends the turn on 3 strength and I do not get to see how. Is this a change made in the game?
