Is this even a thing? Do CV's have magazines like gunships that might get hit and blow up? I think of the big peril for CVs being fire because of all the avgas and bombs and ammo around for the planes.

WWII carries had up to 5" guns. Never heard of that happening during WWII though.

Didn't St Lo explode in Leyte after the kamikaze strike because of a magazine explosion? Although it may have been torpedo storage for its bombers (I haven't got the time to check my sources now).

I'm also fairly sure that Franklin came within a whisker of going the same way after her own kamikaze woes.

They had tremendous fires, but they didn't explode and go down in seconds like the Hood or those BCs at Jutland.

I just got a CV detonation that took a relatively undamaged enemy CV off the map in an instant, from a 10-inch hit. Just seems odd.

The game is likely simulating an explosion in the magazines that store the aviation ordnance. These magazines carry torpedoes and large bombs that are much more destructive than 5" DP rounds. These magazines, though heavily protected, remain the most dangerous element in modern carriers.

I just thought it was odd because one thing that can happen, does quite regularly, in the game is a big fire on your carriers. I thought that was simulating fire sparked by munitions for the aircraft. I've never heard of a carrier blowing up spectacularly like the battlecruisers at Jutland. Of course, carriers IRL don't get shot at by battleships much.

I don't think it is something that happened historically, but as you say, there weren't a whole lot of carriers getting involved in gun battles IRL.

And as others have mentioned, carriers do still have magazines for their DP guns (or 6"-8" anti-surface guns, in cases like the Lexingtons, Graf Zeppelin, etc), plus all sorts of torpedoes and bombs aboard for their air group. Plenty of things that can go boom.
