Strongly Considering Buying a Mega Campaign

Howdy!
I'm a long time fan of SP (back to the first, DOS version many moons ago)--bless Wild Bill for SPWAW, incidentally!!!--and have just reloaded SPWAW and thought I might have another go at it. However, I was always intrigued by the MegaCampaigns. As a big fan of the N. African campaign, I was thinking about Desert War. I've read through these forums and seen many positive comments. The one thing that worries me, though, are the many bug reports. I figured two possibilities:
1) SPWAW + MegaCampaigns = many bugs, such that one might get well into one and suddenly lose the fruits of your labor. Not good! Might lead to real-life violence!
2) Since this is the place where one would report problems if one had them, the sampling is skewed. NO problems is the standard, and I'm just seeing so many bug reports because this is where you report them!
I suspect the latter, but since I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on games any more (family! ), I wanted to double check before opened up my wallet. Is it #1 or #2 (or one I had not considered)???
Thanks very much!

John,
It is true that sometimes bugs have appeared, but most of these have been corrected by patches or easily usable, enthusiast designed software. A lot of it depends on your particular set up, too. I am currently running all three mega campaigns, actively involved in making the 4th one, and have a mod dedicated to H2H installed. That's 3 complete installations of SPWaW and I don't have problems with any of them. I really don't think I'm a rarity.
While it is true that some people do experience problems, there are enough friendly types on this forum to help you get through the problems. We are all hobbyists in the same boat.

I just recently bought the Lost Victories Mega Campaign, d/l
I was also reading about all those bugs about the Mega Cam on this BBS and was a bit suspicius about buying it.
I think the old Mega´s were diff to install becase of all pathes and so on,
But the new d/l worked great (it did not ended up in the right dir when installed but I just moved the files and then all whas ok).
And now I cant see any bugs in the game, its working perfect, and I cant belive how great the Mega is compared to the solitare play, all the "extra" documents and photos before every scen are great and the history that goes with every scen and I just loves the radio broadcast from HQ , I must recomend anyone to grab a Mega who hasent done it yet.

I just saw your message to me but I see that you already bought Desert Fox. Great!
DF does not really have many bugs. At least not important ones. I would say that 98% is perfect. The details I mentioned do not influence game play, are just minor details that I noticed with my taste for micro-management.
You just have to be very careful with the instalation, and for that you can follow the advices in this forum.
If you, like me, like micro-management, then I have some ideas for you:
- When playing DF (or any campaign really) I use a spreadsheet to record and follow-up each squad progress, one thing I do is try to have squads with less experience to have more kills in order to maximize the overall increase in experience for the next battle.
- Keep in mind that the performance and survivability of your men depend a lot on experience (and experience increases more the more they kill - even killing a crew counts). Experience is like this:
Green soldiers - less than 65 experience
Average soldiers - 65 to 74 experience
Good " - 75 to 79 "
Veteran " - 80 to 84 "
Very good veterans - 85 to 94 "
Deadly veterans - 95 to 99 "
Elite soldiers - 100 to 104 "
Super-elite soldiers - 105+ "
- Try to have your non-core units to do the really dangerous job with you core units in their back. Scouting, frontal assaults, etc. When one of your tanks explodes, protect the crew!
Good hunting!

Here is a link to a very useful program to track your campaign's progress.
